First Saturday after Labor Day
Garden Club Park – Downtown Rockford
The annual Rockford Art in the Park exhibition takes place the Saturday after Labor Day in the Garden Club Park between the Rogue River Dam and the White Pines Trail in downtown Rockford. With the Rogue River as a backdrop, Garden Club Park is an idyllic spot for a fine arts celebration.
Artists from across the state of Michigan compete in this juried art exhibition, featuring works in pottery, stoneware, sculpture, jewelry. glassworks, painting, photography, fiber arts and more. Artists are on hand to showcase and sell their works. A “Best of Show” award as well as six “Best of Category” awards (Jewelry, Pottery/Stoneware/Sculpture, Glassworks, Painting, Photography, & Fiber Arts) is presented each year.
The Rockford Area Arts Commission has been hosting this event for 30 years with the help of the Rogue River Artists’ Association. Artist selection begins in April and concludes in June, though occasionally late-entry artists are accepted into the show. Artists are chosen for their artistic skills as well as their ability to bring a unique vision to the event. In 2007 the event expanded to include 32 artists, up from a maximum of 28 the previous years. In 2009, with the addition of the boardwalk along the Rogue River, 34 artists filled the park. Usually blessed with beautiful fall-like weather, the event is one artists and art-lovers alike look forward to all year long.
