Members of Rockford based Rogue River Community Theatre have joined forces once again to produce this all new, original musical.

There are 42 actors in our cast; with  a wide range of ages and talents from beginning to veteran actors. Matt Erste of Rockford is portraying our hero. Matt has been in two other plays with our group, and he tells me he is up to the challenge. It takes a brave man to walk the stage in nothing but a loin cloth. We have family members working together in various roles. That is one of the things I love about Community Theatre – the fact that families can be a part of a creative venture together. It also gives people a chance to make friends in the process. We work long hours and weeks to put together a show it really is a labor of love.

We decided on a musical ,which is a challenge in and of itself. It takes more time to create a musical because not only are you working on dialogue but memorizing songs, choreography and music too. We have chosen a wide range of songs ,some about the Jungle and some from the 30’s ,as that is the era our story takes place. The music is very upbeat and blends well with the comedy. We are fortunate to have Peggy Snell of Rockford as our vocal coach working with the singers in our show. Bethany Rabbitt is our talented piano accompanist and Jon Lee vocal assistant and drummer, both from Grand Rapids.

Kathy Turlington of Rockford has designed a wonderful set, with brilliantly colored flowers, vines, trees and even a hut for our hero. She has also designed and made some whimsical puppets who appear in the show. Rich Raphael is our stunt coordinator and is teaching the actors the safe way to move in fight scenes and how to handle weaponry. Rich works in the film industry as a fight trainer and is a professional martial artist. Cathy Shaefer is the Prop Master, her job is to be sure the actors have the right props for each scene they are in. Jenny Chertos our Wardrobe Mistress, making sure costumes look authentic and fit the time period. Amy Conner our Make Up Artist who will help the actors look the part. Patricia Borysiak is staging and directing. Mike Jonkman our PR man ,who helps promote the production and of course the Rockford Area Arts Commission who have been our loyal sponsors and supporters these many year.

All In all it has been great fun collaborating with such talented people who are very diverse in talents and thinking. I could not even begin to undertake this ambitious production without the help and support of these wonderful artists. There is humor, adventure, and the element of surprise in this show. We hope you come away with a smile on your face and a song to lighten your heart.

After 30 years of service on the Rockford Area Arts Commission, Joyce Torrey decided it was to pass the paintbrush to someone new. Joyce has overseen the commission and during her tenure launched the Rogue River Blues Series, Celtic Fest, the Rockford Creative Arts Center, Rogue River Artists Association and the Rogue River Community Theater. She has received recognition from the City of Rockford and Kent County for her efforts.

The Arts Commission unanimously elected Kayle Clements to fill Joyce’s seat as president of the commission, effective October 1. Kayle, a local musician and founder of Clementunes, has been a member of the commission for the past two years and organized this year’s Art in the Park event with his wife Suzy, also a commission member.

Kayle is involved in the arts throughout West Michigan, working with the Men and Boys Choir of Grand Rapids, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Actors, Civic and Circle Theatres. He was a finalist in the 2009 Great American Song Contest. His latest release Simple Pleasures, was released in October 2009. You can find out more about Kayle at his website: www.clementunes.com

And although she’s no longer president, Joyce is not quite through with her service to the community, She was elected president emeritus of the Arts Commission for a term of one year.
